What Is The Berry Amendment as pertains to the Dept. of Defense?

Joe Greco, MSOD who is President of Greco Apparel has manufactured apparel globally, talks about the Berry Amendment and law relating to producing garments for the military.

Our clients often ask us about specific laws relating to manufacturing uniforms for military so we wanted to record a short video to explain what are some things to consider such as Berry Amendment.

if you work with the Department Of Defense, Berry Amendment, named after Congressman who passed law, states that uniforms need to be manufactured wholly in USA from grass up. This means that if using wool, sheep must be from USA. All parts of garment including yarn, buttons, fabric…complete uniform must be able to be manufactured in USA for defense purposes. If at war with another nation want to be able to make our own uniforms.

There are some exceptions to the Berry Amendment such as performance fabrics that are not made in USA. Objects that are not able to be manufactured in USA must get a waiver to be compliant. Example Rayon fabric, which is only made in Japan right now.
